Sleep Arousal Disorder Basic Information

There are several different types of sexual arousal disorders. Some of them can cause serious problems, others are not a very serious issue. They can be more worrisome than dangerous. Most of the time the person who is experiencing the arousal simply engage in several different types of abnormal behaviors related to sex. The most common and well known sleep arousal disorder is sleep walking or sonambulism. This problem tends to occur in children and causes kids to walk around in their sleep. The kids will not have any memory of the activity. When asked in the morning they will not have any recollection of the event. This is because the brain exists in a pseudo awake, pseudo asleep state that defines the arousal state. Any arousal can therefore be sexual.

Arousal disorders are parasomnia problems that are thought to be the result of an abnormal arousal mechanism that occurs in the brain. It is possible to cause the issue by forcibly waking a person from their normal sleep. The other classical arousal disorders besides sleepwalking are sleep terrors and the problem know as confusional arousals. Those that research the various types of these arousal disorders will testify that they are all related and share some characteristics. In the disorder, the brain exists in a mixed state of being both asleep and awake. The female arousal disorder tends to occur in the early morning sleep periods when the brain is in deep wave sleep and about to transitions into REM sleep. The problems are not thought to be caused by the transition, but a result of some of the deep wave activity that is different late into the night. The end result is that a person is awake enough to act out a variety of different and complex behaviors but still remainasleep and not aware or able to remember these actions in the morning when asked about them.

The variety of arousal disorders tend to run in families. That means that there may be a genetic component, but it is hard to determin. Of course as already discussed, they are more common in children as the sleep states of children are not as integrated as adults. There are triggers for a sleep arousal disorders. Being too overly tired, and having a fever or taking certain medications have the potential to make it worse. Because these disorders of arousal tend to be less common in adults, it is important to have an evaluation if an adult is having the symptoms. In some cases that have been reported in the scientific literature, these disorders are brought on by other conditions, such as sleep apnea, gastric reflux disease, or restless legs syndrome during sleep. He only way to have a proper evaluation is to go to a sleep center and have a sleep specialist should evaluate the person’s behaviors to see if they qualify as sexual arousal disorders.
